Wildlife Sanctuaries of North India
Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the sharp cliffs of hills and narrow valleys of the Aravallis some 200 km from Delhi. The forests are dry and deciduous. Within the sanctuary there are the remains of medieval buildings. There is a 17th century fortress on a sharp hilltop at Kankwari, which provides a panoramic view of flying Egyptian vultures and eagles. The area was confirmed a sanctuary in 1955 and became a National Park in 1979. Sariska National Park lies in the Aravalli hills and is the earlier hunting preserve of the Maharaja of Alwar. Sariska itself is a wide valley with two large flat terrains and is dotted with places of historical and religious interest, including the ruins of the Kankwari Fort, the 10th century Neelkanth temples, the Budha Hanuman Temple near Pandupol, the Bharthari Temple near the park office, and the hot and cold springs of Taalvriksh. The Tigers of Sariska are mainly nocturnal and are not as simply seen as those of Ranthambhor.

The Sariska Park is home to many carnivores including Leopard, Wild Dog, Jungle Cat, Hyena, Jackal, and Tiger. These nourish on an abundance of prey species such as Sambar, Chitel, Nilgai, Chausingha, Wild Boar and Langur. Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is also well known for its large population of Rhesus Monkeys, which are found in large numbers around taalvriksh.

The park also has fine populations of Nilgai, Sambar and Chital. In the evenings, Indian Porcupine, Striped Hyaena, Indian Palm Civet and even Leopard are sometimes seen. The forests are verdant through and right away following the monsoon, but during the dry months of February May there is a shortage of water and in consequence mammals are attracted to water holes.

How to Reach:

Air:
The adjacent Airport to the park is situated at Jaipur (110 km).

Rail:
The adjacent Railway Station to the park is also situated at Alwar.

Road:
The close main town to Sariska is Alwar (36 km). The park is very simply accessible from Delhi too. It is also probable to go via the main Jaipur highway, by which the distance gets extended to approximately 240 km.
