The City Palace of
Udaipur is one of the most amazing constructions of the
Rajput rulers of Rajasthan. Situated in the heart of the city of
Udaipur and towering over the Lake Pichola, the City
Palace reliably infuses a sense of fear in the hearts of its
onlookers. It is the standing evidence of Rajput passion for art
and design despite the fact that the external is not as elegant
as the interiors.
The unique construction of the palace was established by
Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia tribe soon after he
founded the city of Udaipur. Subsequent Maharanas added their
own structures within the palace complex later, but
fascinatingly there is no sign of any contradiction in the
overall appearance. Really, the entire City Palace complex
exudes a beautiful harmony and consistency in its construction
work. The old part of the palace complex nowadays serves as a
museum that stores the legacy of the Rajput rulers for the
visitors. Two of the newer portion of the palace has been
transformed into hotels.
A royal architectural marvel towering over the lake on a hill
bounded by crenellated walls, it is a accumulation of
courtyards, pavilions, terraces corridors rooms and hanging
gardens. The major entrance is through the triple arched gate.
The maharanas were weighed under the gate in gold, the
equivalent amount of which was distributed among the populace.
The surajGokhada, the balcony of the sun, is where the
suryavansimaharanas of mewar presented themselves to the people
in time of trouble to restore their confidence. The "Mor Chowk'
known for its beautiful peacock mosaics in glass and the Chini
Chitrashala noted for its blue and white stoneware are another
attraction in the palace.
